HOW DOES SPRAY TANNING WORK?
Dihydroxyacetone, or DHA, is the main active ingredient in a spray tan. Naturally derived from sugar cane, it creates colour when it comes in contact with the amino acids found in your skin’s surface cells. The DHA (sugars) react with the proteins on your skin to create a tanned, natural brown colour, similar to an apple being cut open.
IS SPRAY TANNING SAFE?
YES. It is MUCH safer than exposing your skin to the sun’s rays, and you still get that great tanned look. DHA has been approved by the FDA for use in the personal care industry for over 30 years. No adverse affects have been reported other than minor skin irritations on allergic people. Allergic reactions are extremely rare and if you have experienced allergic reactions to self-tanning or other beauty products please arrange a skin patch test first with your therapist. Compared to UV rays, which are linked to a host of adverse reactions that range from faster ageing to skin cancer, sunless tanning is healthier and more effective.
WHAT SHOULD I DO TO PREPAIR MY SKIN FOR MY APPOINTMENT?
I recommend you exfoliate your face and body for at least 3 days leading up to your appointment for the best results. This creates a fresh, even layer of skin cells for the tan to develop. If you must exfoliate on the day of your appointment, DO NOT scrub hard. Do not apply moisturiser, perfume, deodorant or make-up the day of your spray tan appointment. We recommend to wax or shave at least a few days prior to your spray tan. Starting with this perfectly polished base is a must for streak-free coverage and long-lasting colour.
WILL MY SKIN TURN ORANGE?
The general rule to follow for avoiding the dreaded orange tint is to only use high-end brands and only process for the recommended time. Mine Tan’s solutions are made with premium ingredients that fight against discolouration, so you can look forward to a beautiful bronze finish.
HOW SOON AFTER TANNING DO I NEED TO SHOWER?
You will need to shower the bronzers off between 1-3hrs after your appointment, please consider this when you make your booking.
The longer you leave any type of Mine Tan product on your skin, the darker your tan will be.
If you are using a spray tan for the first time or experimenting with different MineTan products, lighter could be your best option. You can always go for a darker tan second time around. Most MineTan products will continue to get darker over a 24 hour period.
When you do shower, only use lukewarm water to rinse your skin for sixty seconds. You should not use any type of soap on your skin and must avoid scrubbing your skin. Otherwise, you could remove your MineTan product and end up with uneven coverage. Dry off gently with a towel and moisturise your skin daily to maintain the best results for your MineTan spray tan. As your technician I will advise you on this during your consultation.
HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?
After getting the best fake tan of your life, chances are that making it last is at the top of your wish list. With little care, good tanners fade in about seven days. To double that number, stock your beauty cabinet with moisturisers to slow down shedding, and keep your skin hydrated & glowing! Before your tan ensure you exfoliate to remove dry, dead skin cells and moisturise morning and night after your spray tan has fully developed. To ensure the longest lasting tan - you can always add on our extras!
WILL MY TAN WASH OFF?
Your Mine Tan will deliver amazing colour. When first applied you will see the bronzer which gives you instant, temporary colour while your spray tan is developing underneath. It is the bronzers that you’ll see being removed when you take your rinse/shower. DHA is clear, your tan will continue to develop for up to 12-24 hours.
CAN I SWIM IN POOLS?
Swimming in chlorinated pools may cause your tan to wear quickly, when leaving the pool or ocean after a swim dry yourself down by patting your body not rubbing it dry with the towel, this will help maintain your spray tan. A quick dip is fine, but think of how fragile your skin becomes when you lie in the bath too long - same mentality applies!
IS IT SAFE TO SPRAY TAN WHEN PREGNANT?
There are no tests showing that spray tanning during pregnancy is harmful. The ingredient in the tanning solution that gives you your tan is DHA and this is made from sugar cane, and has no known problems. This is your decision to make, I encourage you to do your research in order to make an informed decision. If in doubt we recommend you consult with your Doctor.
CAN I BREASTFEED AND GET A SPRAY TAN?
If Breastfeeding we suggest that you leave your bra on and do not get your breast tanned, can never be too careful with wee ones.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO WAX - BEFORE OR AFTER A TAN?
Waxing is recommended at least 2-3 days prior to having your spray tan, this is to ensure the pores of your skin are closed. If the pores of your skin remain open bronzer can become trapped in the pores of your skin creating a spotty effect. Please discuss this with your spray tan technician.
WILL MEDICATION AFFECT MY TAN?
Some medication can affect hormonal changes and the bodies pH levels which can change the outcome of your tan.
I'M CURRENTLY UNDERGOING IPL/LASER HAIR REMOVAL, WHEN IS IT SAFE TO TAN?
It is ok to tan 24 hours AFTER but NOT BEFORE as the IPL will tattoo the colour of the tan into your skin. All tan should be removed before your next laser treatment.
I'M WEARING A MOISTURISER, WILL THIS AFFECT MY TAN?
Some moisturisers act as a barrier against your spray tan and can oxidise and cause the bronzers to turn green. We suggest using our pre tan prep spray to remove oil, make up and excess moisturiser before your spray tan as it can negatively impact on the outcome of your tan. However, on patches of very dry skin/exzema, or where tan tends to grab (elbows, knees, ankles and wrists) I will sometimes recommend a light barrier cream.
I USE A SELF TANNER, CAN I SPRAY TAN OVER THE TOP?
It is best to wait until you have exfoliated off the old colour first for best results, however I can cover over old tan fairly well!
I HAVEN'T EXFOLIATED WILL THIS AFFECT MY TAN?
Exfoliation is an important part of the pre-tan process. By removing the dead skin cells to leave a clean smooth surface you create the best possible conditions for your spray tan. If you do not exfoliate it can result in a shorter life or patchy tan.

WHAT ARE THE SPRAY TAN EXTRAS?
Black Magic Pre Tan Prep - Rebalancing Body Primer:
Black Magic Tan Prep is a body primer designed to rebalance the pH levels of the skin, lock in moisture, and minimises pores. pH stands for "potential hydrogen" and is used to describe the acid-alkaline ratio of a substance, which ranges from 0 (the most acidic) to 14 (the most alkaline).
Why is this important?
The health of your body and skin is directly linked to maintaining the right balance between acidity and alkalinity. "The skin's barrier, which is known as the acid mantle, is responsible for keeping in lipids and moisture while blocking germs, pollution, toxins, and bacteria. To work its best, the acid mantle should be slightly acidic, at a 5.5 pH balance. When it's too alkaline, skin becomes dry and sensitive; you may even get eczema. You may also experience inflammation. Keeping the pH balance of your skin in the neutral zone means your skin is in the best possible condition for your spray tan.
Black Magic Tan Lock:
The Ultimate Finishing Treatment - Waterproof Your Tan | Lock In Colour | Hydrate & Moisturise
Black Magic Tan Lock is the ultimate finishing treatment. Tan Lock hydrates and moisturises the skin, locks in colour while water proofing your tan . It also serves to minimise any smudging of your new Black Magic Tan during development time making it a “must have” addition for all tanning lovers.
*Please note: this solution is not always in stock - send us a message close to the time of your booking to enquire about our solutions. If we don't have it in stock and you give us enough notice, we can always get it in for you!
HOW MANY DAYS BEFORE MY EVENT SHOULD I BOOK MY TAN?
It's best to get a spray tan 1-3 days before your event. This allows time for your tan to fully develop and gives you time to have two rinses in between the tan application and the event. This allows you to fully remove all trace of the bronzers from your skin. The bronzers are used in the solution as a guide colour so I know where to spray (the active ingredient is clear). Two rinses removes all the bronzer from your skin and leaves you with a healthy glow that won't rub off on your clothing!
